Greek Myths and Shit | Eris, Punk Rock Goddess of Chaos

Eris, the punk rock goddess of chaos

Eris: Punk Rock Goddess of Chaos

Eris, the Greek goddess of chaos and discord, holds the title of “badest bitch” in Greek myths. Because of this “bad bitch energy” she often gets written off as a joke, but if you know anything about bad bitches they thrive when mother fuckers be talking trash about them. To be on this B.A.M.F’s level you need to check her profile, understand she got the street cred and not dis her before you know her. Her mark is heavy with symbolism and shit, her reach even inspires modern culture and continues to award punk rock points to those who call upon her awesomeness.

The Origins of Eris

In ancient Greek mythology, Eris was the daughter of Nyx, the goddess of night. Known as the goddess of discord and “de’ struggle”, her job was to fuck with any asshole who thought they were hot shit. But the Greeks felt this shit was necessary cuz like life lessons and whatnot. Some philosophy shit says “There is no strength without getting your fucking ass handed to you”…or something like that. Today her theme song would totes be “HUMBLE” by Kendrick Lamar.

Eris in Symbolism

Eris is often seen holding a blinged-out golden apple, a symbol of badassness. Eris was heading to crash a party with the Gods and Goddesses of Olympia, cuz ya know she's a DGAF Kween. She spotted these other badass mamas, Athena, Aphrodite, and Artemis. Eris thought to herself, “I'm gonna trip up these divine bitches.” She pulled out a golden apple (to which she had like a divine connection to cuz like, symbolism and shit). The apple was marked with the word "Kallisti," meaning "to the fairest," and was thrown into the middle of these heavenly goddesses. Seeing that the blinged-out golden apple was meant for the fairest, (which is a poetic word for “head bitch in charge”). All three goddesses reached for the apple at once. They stopped and glared at one another, surely the other hoes knew that they were the true HBIC of the bunch? “I'm the sexy one” claimeth Aphrodite. “I'm the gorgeous brains”, claimeth Athena. “I'm the uncatchable wild babe!”, growledeth Artemis.

All together these cosmic babes shouted, “The blinged-out golden apple belongs to me!”

Well needless to say these Olympic Lady Gods get into the ultimate catfight that eventually resulted in the Trojan War. If y'all saw that movie “Troy” where Brad Pitt played Achilles, that Greek bad boy with a weak heel that's what that shit was about.

Eris is the twist in this story, she trips up mother fuckers for fun but in Greek life this was all symbolic and shit, showing what happens when someone thinks they are hot shit. Vanity and trivial matters can be our biggest downfall even with the Gods themselves, proving just how powerful such character defects can be. If those goddesses simply walked away or paid no mind to what some random shiny fruit had written on it, secure in their power and divinity then none of the chaos that ensued would have occurred. That's some powerful shit and necessary to ponder on even in our times. The ego is one cold fucker when left unchecked.

Eris and Ares

Behind every badass mother-fucker is an even “badder” bitch. Ares, the god of war is no exception to this. Being the god of war Ares is seen as being a true-grit god of tough fuckers. Who better than to be paired with than the true HBIC Herself, Eris? Being a “real one”, the original “ride or die”, She would accompany him into battle, spreading chaos and discord among the warriors. In some accounts, she even had a son named Strife, who would also join them in war. So to disregard Eris is a foolish thing indeed, She was incredible in Her own right so much so that She even knocked boots with Aries and became the Mother of Strife! (Strife means “vigorous or bitter conflict”).

Eris in Modern Culture

Eris is popular in today's culture, especially in punk rock. Punk rock, which focuses on shaking up society, mirrors Eris's chaos. Bands like the Sex Pistols and the Distillers make music that's raw and in-your-face, just like Eris's challenge to normality and call for change. She is the punk rock goddess, a sign of rebellion and freedom for those who aren't afraid to be different.

Eris, the punk rock goddess of chaos, represents change, transformation, and life's unpredictability. From her roots in Greek myths to her role in today's culture, she symbolizes the chaos that sparks change. Her impact is still seen today, showing the lasting power of her story. As we handle life's ups and downs, we can learn from Eris, accepting the chaos and using it to inspire personal growth.
